Easy Read
A simplified version of the content for learners who need plainer language.
Easy Read is an adaptation of the content into simpler language and structure — shorter sentences, common words, one idea at a time. It supports learners with intellectual disabilities, learners still developing literacy, and anyone who benefits from plainer text.
An Easy Read version is not a summary and not a replacement. It is the same content, made more approachable, offered alongside the original.
Decisions to make
- Does your audience need it? If the ADT will be used in inclusive classrooms, an Easy Read version widens who can participate meaningfully.
- Review is essential. Simplifying content is a pedagogical act. Check that the simplified version preserves the meaning and does not talk down to the reader.
Configure and generate
Easy Read needs your book's pages laid out first — if Storyboard isn't finished yet, the stage tells you so instead of letting you run it. Tune the Easy Read Prompt (and how many blocks are processed per batch) in settings if you want to steer the simplification, then select Run Easy Read.
Review and edit
Once it's generated, every simplified text block sits side-by-side with its original, grouped by page. Search across original or Easy Read text, and jump between pages if the book has several. Select a block's Easy Read text to edit it in place.
Readers switch between the original and simplified text with an Easy Read toggle in the ADT itself — this stage doesn't remove or replace the original, it produces the alternate version alongside it. Every edit and re-run is saved as a new version, so you can always roll back.
Not a replacement
The point of Easy Read isn't to make the "real" version disappear — it's to give readers a choice. A well-reviewed Easy Read block reads as its own complete thought, not a note about the original.
